The song was written by Peter Campbell with some help from Brendan Walmsley.  The song is based on the life of James Stephen Farrell, a railway fettler from NSW who served with the 31st Battalion AIF and was killed at the Battle of Fromelles.  His body was never recovered, hence the title, ‘The Lost Soldier.’  Peter, who served with the 8th/9th Battalion, had the idea for the song whilst marching in the ANZAC Day parade in 2014.  He contacted friend and three time Golden Guitar winner, Brendan Walmsley to help him fine tune the lyrics and bring the song to completion.  Together, they won the ANZAC Song of the Year Award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2020.  The song is dedicated to all who served.
