Life in the trenches of Gallipoli was replete with disease, death and discomfort for our diggers.But many of them described this experience as a 'picnic' compared with their time on the Western Front at the battles of Fromelles and Pozieres.The Fromelles campaign in northern France, for example, claimed almost 2,000 Australian lives in a single day.Yet despite these horrific events, many Australians know only a fraction of what occurred.
